My Menopause Story

My Menopause Story is space in which as women we can reclaim our voices and share our personal experience of perimenopause and menopause. It’s time for our voices to be heard.

Our knowledge and experience of menopause have been coloured by shame, secrecy and inherited narratives as well as societal and cultural misinformation. It’s time for women to speak up and change the way this natural transition is perceived. The mission of My Menopause Story to to break the taboo around menopause and empower women through the re-writing of these outdated societal narratives.

There is so much power and resonance when we share our stories. And when you do so from a place of truth and courage not only does this serve the women walking with you but gifts a legacy of authentic narratives to inform and inspire generations of women who follow you.

My Menopause Story was born out of a belief that everyone’s journey into menopause is unique and that each and every one our stories matters. Which is why we share all menopause stories told by women from all walks of life. We do this to empower and educate not just women in menopause but also the next generation of women and the one after that. It’s time to raise your voice.

Gabriella’s Menopause Story

In my early forties perimenopause totally caught me off guard. Never even heard of the word! I was an ambitious career-driven woman in my 20s-30s. When I started my family, I applied the same drive and ambition to be the perfect mother, perfect wife and busy entrepreneur launching my yoga career and running my own studio. But I did this at the expense of my health - putting myself last, not sleeping enough or nourishing myself well.

By my early 40’s I was running on empty, ignoring the creeping anxiety, the heart palpitations, achy joints, low libido and forgetfulness. I spent eight years in perimenopause residing in a liminal space between where I once was and where I was headed. Longing for a past version of myself, grieving parts of my identity, unsure of what was next. This grief would show up as depression, rage, irritability and a sense of betrayal over my body no longer serving me in the same way.

I felt alone in my journey but sensed I was held by the practices of yoga, somatic movement and meditation. These practices initiated me in the unspoken wisdom we all have as women.

Looking back I realise that being in the discomfort of the ‘inbetween’ gifted me the opportunity to embark on deep inner work, growth and transformation. Learning about myself, and focusing on things that really mattered, tuning into my heart’s deepest desire and life purpose.

Emerging on the other side has been expansive, empowering and life-affirming. Which is why I am making it my life’s work to guide women through to the other side.
