Yoga for Menopause

my yoga story

Yoga has always been a true and steadfast companion offering me a sense of grounding, clarity and connection.

My yoga journey began 25 years ago whilst seeking balance in a busy professional career in marketing and PR that took me around the world. Yoga has always been a true and steadfast companion offering me a sense of grounding, clarity and connection. The practice has been my anchor in periods of enormous change from career woman, motherhood, entrepreneur, empty nester, menopause and now post-menopause.

I have a deep appreciation for Yoga philosophy which teaches kindness, contentment, acceptance and self-reflection. Yoga’s teachings have shaped how I treat myself and others with greater love and compassion.

This class is a simple and fun way to welcome energy, aliveness and clarity to your body and mind. A great practice when feeling fatigued, low in mood, a bit brainfoggy or just need a quick pick me up from sitting for too long.

This class aims to soothe the nervous system and deeply relax the mind and body providing relief to hot flushes, night sweats, irritability and sleeplessness.

Yoga for Pelvic Floor Health

This yoga class brings awareness to the pelvic floor and lower body through breath, gentle movement and deep relaxation. Starting with a long relaxation, we then bring gentle movement to the body, practicing yoga poses to bring tone and range of movement to the pelvic floor. Class ends with a guided lower body relaxation.

Meditation: Befriending your Whole Self

In this short meditation class, be guided through an embodied enquiry of the layers of your body (physical, mental, emotional, energetic, spiritual) as a way of tuning into, welcoming and befriending your body. This is a really useful short practice to connect to yourself at the start of your day, before any yoga class and when you are experiencing feelings of anxiety, stress or overwhelm.

Gentle Yoga to Aid Digestion

This gentle yoga class begins with slow moving twists, side stretches and poses all designed to gently help support your digestive system. The class finishes with a seated practice to encourage strong posture and uses breath awareness to support digestive balance.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga is one of the best forms of movement for women as we age. With regular practice yoga can help improve flexibility and balance, support muscle and bone strength, reduce stress, enhance sleep, boost mood and cognitive function. The focus on inner awareness and attention of our body’s abilities enhances the way we feel about our bodies improving self-esteem and confidence.

Yoga is for everybody regardless of experience, age or ability. Yoga is much more than a physical practice although practicing regularly does engage your muscles, build strength and burn calories.

Most importantly, yoga is a practice that cultivates awareness of your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual state and this can improve your outlook on life and how you feel in your body putting you in a better frame of mind to make healthy food and lifestyle choices.

Yoga allows us to change how we perceive and respond to stress.

The hormonal changes women experience in Menopause can have a psychological and emotional impact on mental health leading to low mood, depression and anxiety. Yoga helps women find calm in the storm of these symptoms. In a yoga practice, we focus on breathing and conscious relaxation which leads to lower heart rate and blood pressure, switching on your parasympathetic nervous system and allowing you to “rest and restore.” From this place the mind and body feel calm, grounded and safe which can reduce anxiety and depression.

Stress is also known to be a key driver of many menopausal symptoms and in particular anxiety so Yoga allows us to change how we perceive and respond to stress. The actual yoga poses cultivate inner awareness and attention of our body’s abilities enhancing the way we feel about our bodies and improving our mood. Studies have shown that just 20 minutes of yoga can provide mental clarity and help you process information better.
